Eres Holz was born in 1977 in Israel. From 2003 to 2009 he completed his Diplom in Music Composition with Hanspeter Kyburz and computer music with Wolfgang Heiniger at the Academy of Music “Hanns Eisler” Berlin.
Eres has served as lecturer for Algorithmic Composition at the Berlin University of the Arts and as lecturer for Algorithmic Composition at the University of Music “Hanns Eisler” Berlin. He was an assistant at the IRCAM-coordinated ECMCT-Project, European Course for Musical Composition and Technologies at the Berlin Institute of Technology (Technische Universität Berlin). From 2011 to 2012 Eres lectured on composition in the music education project “Querklang”, a collaborative project of Berlin University of the Arts in collaboration with the festival for contemporary music “MaerzMusik”.
In June 2011 Eres coached actors for the puppet theater piece “Der Grüffelo” as part of the education program of the Berlin Philharmonic.
His works have been performed in Germany, Switzerland, Israel and Spain, among others by Ensemble Adapter, Ensemble Zafraan, Trio Nexus and Ensemble Meitar, as well broadcasted on the national German public radio broadcaster Deutschlandradio and on the Hessian Broadcaster.
Eres recieved prizes for his compositions in 2005, 2008 and 2010 at the Hanns-Eisler-Prize: Competition for Composition and Performance of Contemporary Music. In 2012 he was nominated for the German Music Authors Prize in the category “Promotion of young composers”. Eres recieved a grant for the 2013 Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Eres Holz draws inspiration from confrontation with extra-musical disciplines such as psychology and film which manifests itself notably in his music. His composition LATAH (2006/07) was inspired by dealing with the same-named mental disorder from Malaysia, Weisse Wunden (2008) is based on text by the Belgian director Jan Fabre. Holz makes this extra-musical content collide with partly rigid inner-musical organization principles, which he developed by using algorithmic Models. In addition, Holz uses electronic sounds – often harking to an archaism, which he contrasts with highly expressive instrumental gestures.
He is Member of the Composers’ Unions Klangnetz and Atonale in Berlin.
